Acupuncture We are very excited to announce the addition of acupuncture to our hospital's wide range of services! Acupuncture can be used as part of a treatment plan for a variety of conditions ranging from arthritis pain to behavioral issues. To learn if your pet is a candidate for acupuncture, call to schedule a consultation appointment with Dr. Shepard. During the consultation, your pet will be examined and his or her medical needs will be discussed to determine if acupuncture is an appropriate treatment, or if other medical tests are needed. Consults can take up to an hour and a half. If acupuncture is a good treatment option for your pet, an appointment for the procedure can be scheduled. Dr. Shepard often will recommend alternative herbal supplements as part of your pet's treatment plan.
Meet Sydney!
Sydney is a 12 year old boxer mix who is being treated with acupuncture because of weakness in her back legs. She has had multiple treatments so far and has responded very well! Her back legs are stronger and she has had an easier time getting up and moving around.
Sydney tolerates her acupuncture treatments extremely well. All of the needles have been placed in this picture, and she is relaxing on a padded bed. Sydney has not had any sedation before her treatment. Sedation is usually not needed and is actually not recommended prior to acupuncture. Most patients are calm and relaxed during their treatments.
Here's a closer look at the acupuncture needles over Sydney's lower back. The three wires you see are clipped to electroacupuncture needles. Electroacupuncture sends a mild electrical impulse through the needle into the desired location to provide additional stimulation to the chosen area. The electrical impulse is not painful. Sydney feels a mild tingling at the sites where the needles are placed.
